HUNTSVILLE, AL – April 6, 2023: Cumulus Media’s Huntsville, AL, CHR station 104.3 WZYP stepped up to bring relief to a town devastated by an EF4 tornado on Friday, March 24th. Steve Smith, Operations Manager, Cumulus Huntsville, and Program Director/Afternoon Host, 104.3 WZYP, is also a storm chaser and after seeing online the extensive destruction from the tornado that tore through Rolling Fork, MS, he and the station team decided they had to take action to help out their neighbors. Most of the small town of Rolling Fork (population 1700) was destroyed or damaged when the tornado moved directly thru the heart of town.

104.3 WZYP connected with three local Wal-Mart locations to set up live relief drive events last week, and WZYP listeners once again answered the call to help. Local TV stations also helped promote the event. The result? Station volunteers were able to fill up the WZYP box truck with clothing, food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, plastic bins, toys and other needed items. WZYP’s Steve Smith and morning show host Mojo then made the 5 ½ hour drive to deliver the supplies to the Cajun Navy relief group, along with other local organizations on the ground.

Smith said: “I always feel so proud driving into a town that’s been through a disaster in our truck, knowing that we have so many needed items to distribute. And on the way home after I’ve seen so much heartache and damage, I’m just thankful that I get to go home… to a home.”

President Joe Biden visited Rolling Fork on Friday, March 31st, and WZYP arrived on Monday, April 3rd. Previously, Smith and Mojo took the WZYP truck filled with collected relief items to Waverly, TN, after that town’s deadly flash flood, and also to Mayfield, KY, after they were hit by a tornado, and have brought much-needed relief to other locations over the years.

Smith noted: “We’ve been very lucky in recent years around our area with no major disasters, so we choose to help others who are in need.”
